The Golf Swing: Force = Mass x Acceleration

The golf swing is an incredibly complex motion. It requires the powerful transmission of force through your ankles, knees, hips, back, shoulders, arms, and wrists in order to swing a golf club at speeds of 80-120 mph around the body. Over the course of a round, we perform this motion anywhere from 40 to 70 or more times (more for some of us than others) and often on uneven or unstable surfaces. No wonder golf is hard and can lead to pain.

Mobility vs Stability

Your body is good at finding ways to accomplish a task, like swinging a golf club, even if it occurs at the expense of injury. The joints of the body are designed in alternating mobile and stable segments. If we lack mobility in joints like our hips or thoracic spine then we put excessive strain on other joints designed for stability. Likewise, if we don't have stability in areas like our low back we can't control mobile joints through their entire motion.

Overuse and Fatigue

Golf injuries typically build slowly. Pain often develops due to repetitive strain over the course of weeks, months, or years. Physical limitations can lead to poor swing mechanics often adding to the excessive forces your body experiences. Not only can this result in pain but it can also rob you of distance and control. At Drive Motion Physical Therapy not only can we help you train in the optimal manner for your body, but we will also work with your swing instructor to determine if your swing faults (early extension, swaying, hip slide, etc.) could be the result of physical limitations.

No longer enjoying the game you love?

Here’s the encouraging part — most golfers respond quickly to physical therapy when the right issues are addressed. Here at Drive Motion Physical Therapy we specialize in the golf swing. We will evaluate how your body moves during your swing, identify mobility/stability/strength deficits that are contributing to your limitations, and create a customized rehab and performance plan. We will teach you movement strategies to prevent minor issues from becoming chronic injuries. Our goal is simple — At Drive Motion Physical Therapy we want to help you move better, play longer, and perform at your absolute best.
